The almanac (黄历, also known as the Tung Shing 通胜) is a traditional Chinese calendar that notes what each day suits. We share it as cultural reference. We leave out its entries on medical treatment, lawsuits and praying for children, and a list says so when that happens. Please don’t let a calendar decide when you see a doctor.
How this almanac is worked out
- Source: the almanac tables built into the open-source lunar-javascript library (version 1.7.7). The library doesn’t cite a classical source for its good-for and avoid tables, and we’re having them reviewed.
- Which day: we show the standard entries for the calendar date you choose. “Today” follows your device’s time zone. The entries themselves aren’t recalculated for your time zone.
- Lunar date and year: these follow the Chinese lunar calendar, so the year here turns at Lunar New Year. BaZi charts on this site turn the year at Li Chun instead.
- Day: each almanac day runs from midnight to midnight on the calendar date. The 11pm rule used in BaZi charts doesn’t apply here.
- Month: for the good-for and avoid lists and the day officer, the month changes on the calendar day of each solar term, and that whole day counts in the new month.
- Day officer: counted from the month’s branch to the day’s branch, in the traditional order 建除满平定执破危成收开闭.
- Directions: the Joy, Wealth and Fortune directions come from the day’s heavenly stem, using the library’s standard tables (its default second table for Fortune). They belong to the date and aren’t personal to you.
- Solar-term dates are given in China Standard Time (UTC+8).
